SDL on PS3

Early news, but oh such juicy news that is worth broadcasting about the globe.  According to the submitted code set, the software engineers at IBM R&D Lab in Boeblingen, Germany have been busily integrating Sony PS3 hardware with the open Simple DirectMedia Layer.  This makes easy porting of long-time established multimedia players and games to PS3 running Linux — and making openness inroads into its closed hardware architecture — without sacrificing too much in performance.

CBM PET 4032

CBM PET 4032I influenced my high school computer lab to purchase Commodore computers when I showcased my $300 VIC 20 home computer.  Now, I get to own one at a fraction of its original price.  Fortunately, the Commodore tape drive is compatible to save any software I write for this machine, although I will look for a IEEE-488 interface for an external floppy drive.

VIC on HDTVNow, if you think that is bad, take a look at two technologies that could not possibly be further apart.  A standard 5k VIC 20 hooked up to a 52″ Sony LCD HDTV — I cannot wait for my Mega-Cart to return from a minor operation to make up for a resistor that is out of tolerance in the VIC.

For those retro gamers out there, I posed this question here and got a link back to this uniquely themed blog.

Making Three

I played another round with my old man yesterday, and he did something entirely uncharacteristic.  He succumbed to hitting a driver off the tee on a par 3 — that plays 192-yards.  Well, you just knew he was going to catch a lot of razzing from me, but that didn’t seem to bother him.  Nor did it bother him when his attempt only went a 100 yards either.  Instead, he hits this awkward-looking, trap sand wedge shot 90-yards to within 7-feet of the cup.  Somehow, his ensuing putt rolled in for par.

Anyway you look at it, it is still a 3 on the scorecard.  But I’ll never let him forget how he got it!
