With the latest kernel 2.6.31.6-145.fc12.x86_64 installed to fix a DRM bug with my Radeon HD3870 in place, I am now able to run Compiz Fusion on my Gnome desktop. Well, I must admit, the eye-candy is robust and very appealing. Here’s my ‘how to’ to install the necessary packages to get this 3D plugin ready for use:
$ yum install compiz-fusion-gnome compiz-fusion-extras-gnome
$ yum install fusion-icon-gtk
$ git clone git://anongit.compiz-fusion.org/fusion/plugins/atlantis
$ cd atlantis
$ yum install compiz-devel compiz-bcop
$ make
$ make install
$ fusion-icon
Next, you should see a new icon in your system tray. Right-click it for its Settings menu and go to its Effects category. There, you will see a new entry called Cube Atlantis — enable it. Next, you will need to go to Desktop category and enable Desktop Cube. From there, you will need to go to its Transparent Cube tab and decrease Opacity When Not Rotating setting in order to see through your wallpaper. Enjoy the show!
This screenshot really doesn’t do the plugin justice, but nevertheless, here’s a picture to help visualize what all the fuss is about:
