You must have telnet client software to connect to the rpgd server.

The terminal emulation must be able to support ANSI BBS and/or DEC VT100 or higher with 7-bit protocol.   Below are some instructions to aid you in setting up your telnet session:

Linux
Windows 95/98/NT
HyperTerminal for Windows (FREE)
Windows RPGclient w/sound (FREE)

Linux Telnet Instructions

If you are using Linux telnet client, you should add an entry in a .telnetrc file in your home directory as follows:

robert.hurst-ri.us
mode character
set crlf off
unset escape

Note that the host entry has no leading white space, but its subsequent lines must have leading white space.

Microsoft Telnet Instructions

If you are using Microsoft's telnet client that comes with Windows 9x/NT, you should setup its preferences as follows:

Select menu option Terminal, then Preferences to get this dialog box:

After, click the Fonts... button to get this dialog box:

Finally, select menu option Connect, then Remote System... to get this dialog box:

HyperTerminal for Windows

A free, enhanced version of HyperTerminal is available for download.  Setup as your default telnet client and modify the calling properties as follows:

Windows RPGclient w/sound

More free software!  This software is for dedicated Hack & Slash access only, but it provides terrific sound support.  Just select emulation #3 within the game and you will get the sound effects from your speakers.  Click here to download.
